FlowMotion Art is a revolution and a renaissance, a dream and a reality; art and environment. Seattle-based artists Garth Murray and Tom Mattausch combine their vision and passion with an arsenal of skills and media to create permanent art installations. An uncompromising and ambitious spirit flows through these monuments. Learn more on what we are about and why we need you.
That's right! Take a look at the kinetic, water-powered mechanisms which provide the uncanny drip and percussion rhythm behind Cascade Valley Hospital's sculpture centerpiece, American Suikinkutsu. Watch the video over at youtube that shows a closeup of the miniature aluminum and nylon shishi odoshis (deer scar-ers) inside our prototype suikinkutsu. Shishi odoshi are the other prominent Japanese fountain art form along with suikinkutsu. Their most prominent pop culture appearance was in the dramatic fight scene in Tarantino's Kill Bill. We feel our shishi odoshi interpretations are less violent, but no less awesome.
Delivered on time, on budget, but well exceeding everyone's expectations, Tom Mattausch and Garth Murray's American Suikinkutsu now proudly adorns the roof garden of the new Cascade Valley Hospital. Find images in our gallery, or stop in to the hospital in Arlington, WA, and take a look for yourself.
Tom Mattausch and Garth Murray of FlowMotion Art LLC have been selected to create the public art centerpiece for Cascade Valley Health Center's new hospital building roof garden. As described in the hospital Foundation's community newsletter, FlowMotion's prototype was well received by board members and approved for installation in the new building, opening in December '09.
Today, Garth, Tom, and Sheri Lee Aspen of SLJ Designs, the roof garden's landscape architect, toured the construction site with hospital Foundation members. View a picture of the tour or a CAD mockup of the installation.

My musician friend Son Vardy was kind enough to take a little video of me assisting David Smith, proprietor of Blowing Sands Glass Studio, working on a fluted piece.
We have just added Granicrete to the list of media we can work with. Granicrete offers a great way to create a high quality countertop (even directly over your old counter!) with all the artistic flexibility you would expect of us. We can create many great granite/marble looks, but of course we are also stretching the limits of this material with special finishes under the protective coating, including: metallic paints, patina-ed scrap metal pieces, pressed flowers, fiberoptics, even dirt! Whether you want your counter to be crazy or just convenient, take a look at our FlowMotion Granicrete information page .
The grand aqueduct is underway. Our biggest project yet, a combination of welded metal, five pieces of blown glass, intricate stonework, lighting, over a hundred feet of flowing water...and all with our signature FlowMotion organic themes and shapes.
Our patrons have proven as great to work for as we hoped, and operating the heavy equipment for the job has been supremely fun.
The last water project is finally going to be given its chance to shine. FlowMotion has selected talented designer and photographer Julia Bruk to create HDRI images of
The photos will be used for our first marketing materials. As of yet though, we haven't made a marketing push or received media exposure, which means there never be a better time to contact us about creating a FlowNotion. Just letting you know...expect us to get busy, especially as Tom is going to be leaving the country on an art exodus this winter!

Today the FlowNotion proposal for our largest project ever, with over four times the budget of our next largest commission, was accepted by our gracious, unnamed patrons. They may not be able to remain anonymous much longer, after the crowds start gathering to experience the unprecedented environmental art piece which will soon appear in their back yard. This will be our first FlowNotion featuring Tom's blown glass as well as Garth's ornamental welding. Big thanks to our patrons!

While we just launched our site, we're hard at work to add more pictures, ideas and features to it. Why don't you join our newsletter and we'll let you know when we update the site?
FlowMotion Art is the creative vision of Garth Murray and Tom Mattausch, in the form of art installations. Our passion and goal is to create new kinds of beautiful environments, by combining our palette of skills including stonework, ceramics, metalwork, water elements, and more.
FlowMotion Art is environment and landscape as art, realized through the vision of two young, versatile Seattle artists. River rocks artfully placed in mortar serve as a permanent, classical base for our installations. Our goal is large, custom, centerpiece creations. We hope that our work speaks for our potential and love of this art form.
FlowMotion Art LLC is an ambitious young artistic business venture. Focusing the knowledge, vision, and energy of two young, versatile Seattle artists, we aim to push the boundaries of what an environment can be.
